Invite calm into your new home with these nine tips.

After a long day of work, shuttling kids to and from activities, and caring for my family, I want to unwind. Take it from my sister, who recently moved into a new space after a chaotic season. She mindfully chose colors and textures to set the stage for calm. For new home owners, follow her tips below to invite calm into your new space.

Creating a calmer home environment is all about engaging your senses in ways that soothe and ground you. Here's a mix of practical and subtle ideas to help bring more calm into your space:

1. Declutter & Simplify

  • Clear surfaces: Keep countertops, tables, and shelves as minimal as possible.

  • Organize mindfully: Store things in closed cabinets or boxes to reduce visual noise.

  • Let go of excess: Donate or recycle things you no longer use or love.

2. Soften Your Color Palette

  • Use neutral, cool, or earthy tones—think soft whites, beiges, sage greens, dusty blues.

  • Avoid high-saturation colors in rooms meant for relaxing (like the bedroom or living room).

3. 🕯️ Adjust Lighting

  • Use warm lighting instead of bright white overheads.

  • Add lamps, candles, or string lights for a cozy feel.

  • If possible, let in as much natural light as you can during the day.

4. Create Air & Flow

  • Open windows regularly to freshen the air.

  • Add an air purifier or use essential oils (lavender, eucalyptus, sandalwood).

  • Keep your space ventilated and comfortable.

5. Soothing Soundscape

  • Try background music, nature sounds, or white noise.

  • Use apps like Calm or Rainy Mood, or even a simple indoor fountain for water sounds.

6. Textures & Touch

  • Add soft blankets, plush rugs, and cozy cushions.

  • Choose natural materials like cotton, linen, wood, and wool for a grounding effect.

7.  Add Life with Plants

  • A few well-placed indoor plants can bring peace and fresh air. Try snake plants, pothos, or peace lilies—easy and calming.

  • Even a single vase of fresh greenery can shift the vibe.

8.  Create Sacred/Intentional Corners

  • Set up a reading nook, a meditation spot, or even just a comfy chair by the window.

  • Keep it clutter-free and use it only for calm activities.

9.  Evening Rituals

  • Dim the lights at night to cue relaxation.

  • Use incense or a diffuser with calming oils (lavender, cedarwood, bergamot).

  • Consider a “no phone zone” in the bedroom or winding down with a book instead of screens.
